What Are the Different Kinds of Concrete Retaining Walls Available?
Retaining walls are placed in different locations to ensure soil and other materials are kept in place. There are many different kinds of concrete retaining walls used for various applications. A gravity on is thick at the base and narrow at the top, while a counterfort one is usually above and below ground level. Cantilever walls are the same thickness all the way through and have a wide support footing. Buttressed ones are very similar to counterfort walls, however they face the opposite direction. Anchored concrete walls are supported by tethers.
Gravity concrete walls are more commonly used and usually pre-cast. This kind of wall is normally no higher than 4 feet and is regularly used on roadways.
Gravity ones have a thick base which angles up to a narrow top. The angled side faces outward, this is to stop it from falling over. The thickness of the base is equal to one half of the wall’s height.
A counterfort wall is a more economical choice which is usually made on site. It is triangular in shape and uses additional subterranean footing. Counterfort retaining walls are excellent for heights over 25 feet. The design is similar to a cantilever wall; however, it is much cheaper to build. The subterranean footing provides excellent resistance against bending.
Cantilevered walls have the same thickness throughout. This wall uses a wide footing which extends toward the soil that is getting retained. The footing is reliant on the weight of the soil for stability and strength.
Cantilevered walls normally need less concrete than other kinds and can be built on site. These walls are said to be extremely strong and stable structures; however, they can be quite expensive.
